Refauna Project - Reintroduction of Brazilian Tapir at REGUA

Brazilian tapirs disappeared from the State of Rio de Janeiro due to hunting and loss of habitat..

The Refauna project seeks to reintroduce the largest terrestial mammal of t Brazil to protected areas in the Atlantic Rainforest.

The first tapirs, which are distant relatives of the horse, were reintroduced at REGUA (Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu) at the end of 2017.

The Desempenho Farm is a support base for the project.
