Showjumping is one of the most popular equestrian activities. Desempenho is a great place to start and improve this exiting sport.
The objective of showjumping is to jump a course of obstacles without faults and within a time limit. . The course is composed of different type of obstacles, which are set up in lines, combinations and curves. The difficulty of the course is adapted to the level of horse and rider and each obstacle can be seen as a question that is asked of the combination. Apart from knocking down obstacles, refusals, run outs and passing the time limit are also counted as faults.
Before starting showjumping, the rider needs to have a good dressage foundation. He or she needs to have a good balance, know how to apply the correct aids to guide the horse in three gaits (walk, trot and canter)
At school level the courses vary from 40 cm (beginner) to 90 cm (preparatory). Apart from the height and width of the jump, the combination of obstacles also gets more difficult. At the Desempenho Riding School, we aim to teach our pupilstechnical skills (read and correct distances, riding curves and prepare for the jump), lightness (position and release over the jump) and confidence.
Training sessions for showjumping includes flat work, cavallettii exercises, jumping gymnastics and jumping courses. We also do training the cross field (fixed, natural obstacles), which helps build confidence.
From 1 meter upwards, the competition is in open categories, where prizes are awarded according the age group. From this level on, it is important to have a horse at your disposal, that is up to the challenge and this might need n investment in you own horse.
The highest level of competing is Grand Prix, where the obstacles can be 160 cm high and 200 cm wide
The pupils of Desempenho get the opportunity to be part of our showjumping and dressage team and particpate in state competitions for riding schools organized by FEERJ. Our team has had very good results over the years and some of our pupils continued with sucess to higher levels or even became professionals.
